State legislator rants about atheism during committee hearing

Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago) interrupted atheist activist Rob Sherman during his testimony Wednesday afternoon before the House State Government Administration Committee in Springfield and told him, “What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous . . . it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists!”

Yup, this actually happened. This person was actually elected, and as a Democrat no less.

“This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God,” Davis said. “Get out of that seat . . . You have no right to be here!”

This is especially ironic, since Lincoln wasn’t the most religious man himself. He once said: “When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion.”

I guess this incident just serves as a reminder that this is what some Christians think. Freedom of Religion sounds nice, but when it really comes down to it, some Christians just can’t accept it. I’ll add this to the list of things to bring up whenever a Christian tries to pull the whole “atheists are persecuting us!” act.

14 year old Jehova’s Witness turns down treatment and dies

These sorts of stories really bother me. This kid, raised as a Jehova’s Witness, decides to turn down a blood transfusion that would have saved his live, on the grounds that it would make him “unclean and unworthy.”

Of course, when I say “he decided,” I’m simplifying things a bit. There’s no way a young teenager could make this sort of decision rationally. He was influenced by the adults around him who instilled his deep religious faith, and he interpreted this faith (with help from his aunt) to mean that he should kill himself rather than accept medical treatment.

His birth parents, who no longer had custody of him, flew to the hearing to advocate that he should receive the treatment, but ultimately a judge ruled that he could refuse treatment if he wanted to. While it’s easy to blame religion and faith for this tragedy, and they certainly aren’t blameless, we shouldn’t forget people like this judge. He applauded the kid’s maturity in the decision, rather than doing what he should have done: explaining that he was too young to make such a decision, and that respecting crazy religious belief isn’t as important as saving lives.

Data on Americans mined for terror risk

The FBI is gathering and sorting information about Americans to help search for potential terrorists according to a government report obtained Tuesday.

In addition, the report disclosed government plans to build a new database to assess the risk posed by people identified as potential or suspected terrorists.

Remember, this is the country where a you can be arrested for using free wifi or wearing a peace t-shirt. Who out there still thinks all this is worth it in order to “protect” us?

Hamas TV’s Mickey Mouse-ripoff martyred

According to the Associated Press:

A Mickey Mouse lookalike who preached Islamic domination on a Hamas-affiliated children’s television program was beaten to death in the show’s final episode Friday. In the final skit, “Farfour” was killed by an actor posing as an Israeli official trying to buy Farfour’s land. At one point, the mouse called the Israeli a “terrorist.”

“Farfour was martyred while defending his land,” said Sara, the teen presenter. He was killed “by the killers of children,” she added.

You can see some videos of Farfur from Al Aqsa TV here. The show is really disturbing. Basically, it’s this Mickey Mouse-like character urging children to fight Israel.

Now, I know they come from a different environment and a much different culture, but this is just insane. It’s a perfect example of how religion can drive people to do crazy things. Read more…

Seven years for pushing teacher’s aid

(April 1st): Shaquanda is now free. Read about it on her blog.
In Paris, Texas, a town once famous for public lynchings, a recent sentencing of a fourteen year old black girl to seven years in prison for pushing a teacher’s aid is making news all over the Internet. The girl had no previous arrest record, and the teacher’s aid wasn’t hurt. Three months earlier, the same judge sentenced a fourteen year old white girl, convicted of arson, to probation.

Shaquanda, the girl, had been targeted by school administrators before, due to her mother’s complaints of racism at the school. In this instance, the teacher’s aid did not let Shaquanda into the building to take her medicine, and according to Shaquanda the teacher’s aid actually pushed her first.

This case fits perfectly with the reputation for systemic racism in the Paris school system. In the past five years, there have been at least a dozen discrimination complaints filed by black parents against the school district.

Hypocrisy (noun): see Newt Gingrich

hy·poc·ri·sy (noun): a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.

Remember that whole thing with former President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky? And how former speaker of the house Newt Gingrich was leading the charge against him? Well, it turns out Gingrich was having his own affair at the time.

Yup, he was committing adultery just like Clinton, and at the same time.
