More bigotry towards atheism; letter to the editor

Letter to the Editor By Alice Shannon - Soldotna

Uhg, you get tired of reading this sort of thing after a while, but at least they’re consistent. Apparently “freedom” only applies when it’s in agreement with the person making judgement, and anyone who disagrees needs to GTFO (or rather “get off our country”).

Also, I forgot to note, the “in god we trust” hasn’t been there forever. Thanks to Jordan for pointing that out.

About probabilityZero

I'm a rather boring, geeky college student. Most of my time is spent at a computer, reading a book, or sitting in (mostly uninteresting) classes. My hobbies include reading, blogging, creating and running websites, creating amateur video games, arguing incessantly on discussion forums, and buying books on amazon.com because I'm too lazy to go to the library.

  2. Jordan says:

I am I the only one who knows the history of our currency? The phrase ” In God We Trust” was not added to our paper money until the mid fifties. How about instead of just freedom of religion we also get “Freedom FROM Religion”. That sounds much closer to a democracy to me.

  10. carter says:

    lol… “get off our country!”

  11. I like the idea of ruling a nation by putting its rules on its currency. However, in this instance the “we” in the “in God we trust” presumably refers to the person making the banknote, who is proclaiming his faith and that of his religious co-workers as is his right under the Constitution. The statement, however, also serves as a handy reminder of the impermanence of all things; and not to place too much trust in material possessions, which might be whisked away just like that, say, by a pickpocket.

The worthy Alice Shannon of Soldotna doesn’t mention Pastafarianism (belief in The Flying Spaghetti Monster, may you be touched by his noodly appendage) or 101 other cults of various provenances, including some that appear to be followed by aliens in Star Trek, or even Islam. Perhaps she hasn’t heard of non-Christian religions. Fortunately in America one is free to believe in any of them or none. One is even free to be a xenophobic (why should an atheist be any more welcome outside America?) bigoted ignoremus.

The idea of taking prayer out of schools is based on the notion of keeping Church and State separate. It was because that wasn’t happening in Europe that the Founding Fathers came over to America in the first place – in order to escape religious bigotry. It just goes to show that the “Talking in Circles” website is not mis-named.

  12. Matt says:

Atheists are the cause of crime? Then why are atheists so disproportionately UNDER-represented in prisons? I don’t know the exact numbers right off the top of my head, but I believe there is data out there that shows while atheists make up…say 15% of the population of the US, they make up something like less than 1% of the prison population. I’m so sick of reading and hearing this ridiculous idea that freedom of religion means you HAVE TO believe in a god. There is absolutely NO concrete evidence to suggest that this is what they had in mind when they wrote this part of the constitution. Frankly I find it very troubling and it’s an idea that is dangerous to freedom that needs to be combated.

  13. Joe says:

Yarr. I love it when stuff like this happens. Hooray for idiots and all idiot kind.

  14. geo says:

you know what else it says on our money? The new secular order. In latin. on the backs of one’s. Silly religion.

  15. GWP says:

A person like this is beyond reasoning with.

  16. MADCOTTO says:

sorry carter but it has to be said, i just cant see how you let these people live after all you do shoot everyone else

  17. Colleen says:

Lets remember this is the writing of one person.

Not all christians or religious people are so intolerant. Most people think live and let live.

Why did the newspaper chose to publish something like this I wonder? Creating a little controversy to boost sales?

Nothing like Hate to get things going.

Im sure there are more extremists out there that can write hate letters that will boost sales even more.

  18. MADCOTTO says:

the WORLD hates America how that for a headline bet that wont get in the the press

  19. Erin says:

You know irony is that she got the amendment wrong. The amendment reads, “Freedom from religious persecution.” In other words, the amendment protects us from her.

  20. god says:

YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED. THIS COUNTRY WAS BUILT BY GOD. ATHEISTS SHOULD GET OFF THIS COUNTRY. VOTE REPUBLICAN!!!!

  21. Krissi says:

And people like this think that Athiests are the problem? What a joke…

  22. Mark says:

I think that there is another amendment that grants everyone to their own opinion. Hers just happens to be quite ignorant and Bush-like.

  23. Bas says:

This is disturbing. I can’t comprehend how anyone can hate someone for simply not believing something. Oh well.

Madcotto, you seem as ignorant about U.S. as this asshole seems about atheism. You don’t like something in America, then talk to someone who can change it. The taters and tears and bullet holes in the constitution don’t mean its dead, just dying. Yay living docs.

  24. Fairbanks - Heide says:

I agree with the “stupid cunt”… I am also in Alaska… it is 50/50 here with either you believe or you don’t.. But I haven’t seen such a stupid attitude until now… I work for christians (I’m athiest) and NEVER have they treated me that way… you ass.

I am friends with a lot of different people some athiests some christian and the atheists are the most peacefull people i know yeah they can be assholes sometimes but so are the christians So i just want to say that this Alice Shannon is a stupid bitch and dosen’t know what the fu*k she is talking about she should grab a fu*king brain and a heart A true christian wouldn’t talk like that about anybody

  31. Vanessa says:

    Peace out.

  34. Mattias says:

This is a brief comment about the latin translation. The word ‘seclorum’ does come from the latin word for ‘age’. It actually comes up in Pyramus and Thisbe, in describing a wall which has survived many ages. However, the world secular also has that meaning. The basic idea is that religion is ageless, that is it does not depend on the ages(yeah right), but that’s the etymology of it. In terms, purely of etymology, seclorum could mean ‘of the ages’, it could be an objective genitive and mean ‘for the ages’. It could mean ‘of the religiousness/secularness’ or ‘for the religious/secular’(objective genitive again) or it could have one of those meanings as the open meaning and the other one as the implied(that’s my personal belief, looking at the philosophies of the founders, that it was intended as secular but couldn’t be openly expressed at the time).

  35. drawn says:

I just couldn’t read this without leaving a little comment. The Founding Fathers of this great nation were not Christians, (for the most part). Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, Adams, Washington etc. were Deists. Deists believed that while there was no overwhelming evidence against the existence of some god, such as the one posited by Judeo-Christian Mythology, such a God certainly had nothing to with the natural world or with the affairs of mankind. In essence they were one step beyond agnosticism but not out and out athiests, because after all, being the rational and critical thinkers that they were, they just couldn’t prove that there was no god. This nation’s government was not founded on any notion of religion. (However, it must be conceded that we were colonized by Puritans who were just too damn extreme in their fundamentalism even for Liberal England.)

  36. hot Mercedes says:

Hey Necessary Evil, so you are telling us, that the non theists that work in the mint are allowed to print the money they make without the under god crap on it? Your logic, or in this case, complete lack of knowledge and law, proves you have zero clue what you are talking about. Tell whoever you copied that from that they need to go back to grade school and relearn what words mean. The person making the money is not using a magic marker for the bills, and a play-doh press for the coins. The US MINT sets exactly what is on the coin and paper currency. The person who engraves the plates does not have the right to altar what is put on the money; the person working the press can not change what is on the currency. You argument is completely flawed. Teel Mr. Snodgrass, your 3rd period political science teacher, that he needs a full frontal lobotomy.

This kid at least tried, unsuccessfully, to make himself look rational and educated compared to the OP. It DID NOT WORK.

  37. cindra says:

Actually Drawn, despite leaving England for freedom of religion, the American colonies weren’t all that religious. Colonist found it hard to create an established church. Blasphemy laws weren’t directed at non-believers but at those who didn’t belong to the colony’s majority faith. Apparently christians didn’t like other christians who didn’t believe as they did and had anyone not registered to preach, jailed for preaching without a license. They had to register as “dissenters” and had to have the colony’s approval to practice. By 1775 only 10% were church members. Puritans weren’t the only haters, just the most talked about.

God deliberately not mentioned in Constitution
    Letter to the Editor

Alice Shannon’s letter to the editor (Jan. 29) is the most ignorant and unconstitutional thing I have ever read! Ê

It has often been seen on the Internet that to find God in the Constitution, all one has to do is read it, and see how often the Framers used the words “God,” “Creator,” “Jesus” or “Lord.” Except for one notable instance, none of these words ever appear in the Constitution, neither the original nor in any of the Amendments.

The notable exception is found in the Signatory section, where the date is written thusly: “Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven.” The use of the word “Lord” here is not a religious reference, however. This was a common way of expressing the date, in both religious and secular contexts. This lack of any these words does not mean that the Framers were not spiritual people, any more than the use of the word Lord means that they were. What this lack of these words is expositive of is not a love for or disdain for religion, but the feeling that the new government should not involve itself in matters of religion. In fact, the original Constitution bars any religious test to hold any federal office in the United States.

The First Amendment clearly states a separation of Church and State. Religion or the lack thereof has no bearing on citizenship.

Crime is rampant because of hatred. Don’t be a hater Alice.

Now THAT, Carrie, is great :D Finely put, not too agressive but our dear editor is gonna be put seriously off lol…
    off subject :
Anyway, i don’t think denyin christianity will solve anything. It’ll just put us on the same level as those believers. As long as a christian doesn’t talk about his “Lord’s” greatness i don’t think we atheists should do anything. But if those dear peace-loving christians come for us, i think we’ll have to kick their arses off for them.

  44. TehFluffz says:

The funny thing is , she says the US is based on freedom of religion,
but she only mentions types of Christianity there.

  45. DarqueWing says:

In 1965, the US Supreme Court examined the case of United States v. Daniel Seeger, in which Seeger, a folk singer, refused to submit to the military draft as a conscientious objector. Up until then, the “conscientious objector” status was reserved only for those who could say that their religious beliefs prevented them from being able to serve in the military. Yet the Supreme Court decided that Seeger, who was an atheist, could also follow a “sincere and meaningful belief which occupies in the life of its possessor a place parallel to that filled by the God.” As an atheist myself, I can’t underline enough times that last part: “a place parallel to that filled by the God.” In other words: if my atheism means as much to me as your religion means to you, then my atheism IS a religion, and is as protected as any other religious belief. So, to Miss Shannon: the First Amendment is a two-way street. It prohibits Congress from passing any law respecting an establishment of religion (the Establishment Clause) and prohibits Congress from passing any law prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Simply put, religion belongs entirely to the people in any way they see fit, and the government is to have absolutely no religion. The government cannot exile atheists, because, as US v. Seeger shows, atheism is legally classified as a religious belief, and that would be prohibiting the free exercise of our religion.

  46. bud says:

This woman is a moron on so many levels. First of all she believes in god. Second all of her points are completely wrong and infantile. Religion was taken out of school because there were to many religions to represent in our diverse culture, not because of atheists. Third she states all fo her points as if she wrote down these rules and knows how they work. Maybe if this woman wasn’t such a stupid coward she would give us her address so we could send her some feedback about what a “model american” she really is.

  47. Krissi says:

Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we’re all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there’s no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we’re an imagination of ourselves. Now here’s Tom with the weather.

  50. FabreFaction says:

Why doesn’t the USA geographically split itself based on the level of religious zeal????

How about all the people with strong religious beliefs concentrating themselves in the centre of the country, and those with a lower level of religious zeal concentrating themselves towards the coasts……..

This way, the religious zealots will also be protected from attack by foreigners, who we all know bring social and religious destruction. They could form a sort of “bible belt” down the centre of the country.

The atheists could spend their time frolicking in the surf fornicating on the beach, not worrying about offending any puritanical americans, as they would be safely bolt-holed in the bible belt. Foreigners are more likely to head towards the atheist areas as they are heathens and want nothing but debauchery and fornication.

Signs could be put on all roads into and out of the bible belt, warning the traveller that they are either entering or leaving “God’s country”.

To me this sounds like a sensible way of dividing the USA for the benefit of all. It may also be a good idea to mint different currency, possibly with “In God We Trust” and “In Democracy and Freedom We Trust” for the respective areas of the country.

It really beggars belief that in the land of the free, there is a moron that feels you can only be free in you believe in God. I suppose it takes all sorts to make up a society.

Just because we don’t believe in “God” does not mean that we don’t have beliefs. We still have morals. Just because we don’t follow the rules of a story book does not make up bad people. Oh, and just because we don’t believe in God does not mean that we worship Satan.

This makes me want to take a shit on a bible, light it on fire, and place it on her doorstep.

  62. Bill Davison says:

    ? – Who Needs Absurd ‘Beliefs’ – ?
    Reflections of an Octogenarian.

Religiosity? – Throughout life, I’ve never regarded this subject as deserving of any serious thought – - –
However, with quietus in the offing, the excessive religious coverage in the media inevitably agitates the neurons.
Of late, these irritants have provoked a deep re-appraisal – - – that has utterly confirmed my basic intuition!

    ******************************
Logical conclusions after a lifetime of listening inadvertently to the delusive portents of various ‘Faiths’.

A simple story. No need for the meandrine moonshine of ‘erudite intelligentsia’.
Just take yourself back in time & examine unvarnished facts.

Please acknowledge that the primitive mind was bound to generate, quite naturally, mythological imagery of an Elysian nature.
Also, one must accept that the relative ignorance of early Humanity, coupled with understandable fears of the unknown, provided those individuals seeking power over their fellows (a natural human trait), with the conditions to set up as Medicine-Men – Witch-Doctors – Sorcerers – Soothsayers – - – et al, all claiming to have insights & contact with a ‘power’ – of sorts.
So began the blight of Shamanism – - – leading on to airy-fairy religions.

As time unveiled the past, these facts have not been fully appreciated.
Hence – The ensuing rash of religiosity has not been branded for what it really is – - –

    An early conceive – of ignorance & apprehension – - –
Perpetuated thro millennia by IMPOSTORS – Preying on credulous naivety.

The natural process of evolution, via many devious pious paths, has now landed us with the present crop of Archbishops – Ayatollahs – Rabbis – Popes – Imams – JWs – & a host of other hypocritical sect leaders, incessantly brainwashing the largely unthinking masses with their ridiculous & childish ‘Holy Beliefs’.

The Billy Grahams of the world, gifted with gab & showmanship, use their ‘bewitching powers’ to prey on the gullibility of the artless.
Yes indeed, in modern form, the Witch-Doctors are still at it! Mountebanks All!

With it’s initiation as above, religiosity can’t be recognised by any sane person to have the gravitas necessary for any authentic ‘Belief’. Seeking reality is anathema to the pious ones. They critically comment on facts of life that are painstakenly unearthed by the practical hard-working talents of seekers of truth. Knowledge of physics & biology would never have advanced if left to ‘Holy’ men.
Sun would still be orbiting Earth. The dim past is their’s, with mystical rites that are still prevalent, albeit with modern trappings.
They are an absurdity! Their endeavours to exalt religiosity by the erection of ever more imposing ‘Places of Worship’
    merely highlights – Monumentally – the benighted phases of Man’s past. – - – Hell’s Bells! – - – What a shambles!

Weighing up the World-wide situation, a substantial proportion of Humanity are unable to let go of their forebears’ primitive ‘belief’ in a Creator that demands a daily dose of supplication. A person’s specific ‘belief’ is dictated by that part of the globe from where they originated; a simple inheritance of the parents’ unreal ancestral teachings, largely unquestioned! No need to be a ‘Religious Scholar’ (what a fatuous preoccupation) to comprehend why all of this utter humbug survives.

Persistent indoctrination over millennia leave the susceptible with feelings of unease when they attempt to ditch the ingrained silly ‘beliefs’ inherited from similarly misinformed forebears. Most take an apathetic route & run with the various childish theosophical myths passed down through the generations via pious, shallow-thinking naivety – preferring illusion to reality – fantasy to truth.

It has always been decreed that acting on evidential communal common-sense,
ie, utilizing everyday experience & research is the only way forward.

The need to consult Biblical, Qur’anic, or any other ancient crap-laden fairy tales
in order to pursue a decent & considerate existence beggars belief!

The facts listed above are beyond dispute – Theism? / Divinity? – All absolute Man-made hokum!

Any thinking person realises that the Universe is truly an awesome Quantum / Astronomical creation.
As part of that creation, our attempts at it’s full understanding seem futile.

Probing the Atom or ‘Heavenly’ space & we’re contemplating Infinities.

Fouling up our minds with a rag-bag of archaic religiose twaddle does nothing to help enlighten our ignorance!

Anyone taking this farcical subject seriously has to be absolutely pickled in traditional folklore and/or in a sad mental state. Using it’s bogus validity for an easy living and/or monetary gain it’s impostrous practitioners must have no damn conscience at all.

Far too much reverence is devoted to the abstract of religiosity. Vast volumes of impotent bombastic rhetoric has been generated by impostors who use their dominant dishonest acumen to sublimely charm others to wander in an unreal ‘Spiritual Wonderland’ that is totally unworthy of any honest contemplation!

    *************************

A rational response to the ‘standard’ questions posed by religious organisations.

What is the point of life?

Need there be a ‘point’. Nature instructs all of life to reproduce; to what end, we just don’t know & it’s most likely that we never will. We can speculate, but are very far short of the necessary knowledge to form a valid judgement!

Certainly, life’s purpose cannot be identified by any ancient decrepit ‘Belief’!

Nature, red in tooth & claw, is pitilessly indifferent to an individual’s quality of life; the fittest for any environment will prosper. Individual quality of life is a lottery. We have arrived & must make the best of it.
Self-deceivers pray for Ethereal help; none is discernable – - – Quite definitely a DIY job!

We live, utilising facts that the experience of life plus research, provides!

The paralogism of religious charlatans can’t match the knowledge we now possess, scant though it be.
Mystical Theosophy is drivel of the first order.

    What happens when we die?

Starkly, when the brain ceases to function, that ‘being’ ceases to ‘be’.
The motivation driving that unique combination of elements is no more!
    A ‘Spiritual Future’ ????? – - – Pure self-indulgent fantasy!
The chemo-electrical activity of the brain – the mind – is capable of generating any illusive mirage.
If that imagery is not backed up by factual proof, it remains a fantasy.
To give any credence to life after death, one must be round the bend, if not well up the straight!

Natural cognition (common sense), affirms life’s future as solely dependent on reproduction!

    Is forgiveness possible?

With almost limitless mutations possible, genetic functioning can be expected to produce individuals with characteristics of an exceedingly complex gradation, in a myriad of aspects – eg – - -

Brilliant to Thick – Jovial to Morose – Benign to Sadistic – Hetero to Homo – ad inf.

Religions provide a very accessible dump for the guilt generated by the various indiscretions to which all humans must, in some respect, be victim.

Do not kid thyself – No one is immaculate!

Those gifted with conscience & a degree of ‘normalcy’ just have to live with the unfortunates & scallywags – amongst
whom – the ‘Confidence Men’ – enjoying a very comfortable living with their pretentious ‘Divine’ prognostications!

    Further thoughts

With the barbarous & brutal acts of differing factions, the mutiplicity of silly ‘Beliefs’ has always been a handicap that
humanity can well do without. – - – Common sense must prevail!
As the sponge-like mind of an infant readily absorbs info, authentic or fallacious, in teaching the necessary basics of life, the follies of illogical & delusory religions should be emphasized – - – Strongly!
Offspring should be brought up from birth unprimed with needless pestilential ‘beliefs’. – - – Glaringly Obvious!

Preachers pontificate on a subject so ‘Holey’, it is artlessly transparent. Visualise it’s benighted origins & it’s quite obvious that the early human mind was bound to generate mythological imagery of an Elysian nature & from there, receptive fanciful minds took over. ‘Beliefs’ were surely born of ignorance & fear of the unknown! With this realisation, why can’t we all recognise simple basic facts & treat all ‘faiths’ of today as ever they really were – - –
A continuing evolution of irrational early thought.

In this more enlightened age – Pure Phantasmic Godswallop!

The Rt Rev Fred Flintstone & his equally-misguided confederates of all other ‘Faiths’ should have dug themselves out of the Stone-age long long ago!

The Past is unveiled thro Time!
    Let’s all Profit from it! – Not Perpetuate it! – - – - A m e n

End point: Alice Shannon, go fuck yourself.
    Thanks.

This was inspired by a blog comment about this story that read, “I don’t care if kittens can’t hold matches, they’re the reason for forest fires”:

It’s gotten to the point that America is either a) full of REALLY good ninja-satirists, skewing everything from every angle all over this great country…or b) full of REALLY close-minded, uneducated bigots. What if this article had been about blacks, or fat people (quit eating our country!), or Jews, or women’s rights, or whatever…technically “not” having a religion should be covered under the whole “hate laws” thing when attacked for your religion, right? Here’s how the article would read if it were about kittens (those murderous, murderous bastards):

It’s time to stomp on kittens in America. The majority of Americans would love to kick a kitten or two. I get my research by asking my only 3 friends if they agree with me, and two of them do. Therefore, I extrapolate that into the fact that, um, 60% of Americans must agree with me. If you like kittens, you should go back to where you came from, which was probably Holland, with your stupid, wooden shoes. The United States is based on freedom of religion, speech, etc., which means you can believe in God and free speech, but there’s no Constitutional protection or tolerance of kittens! With their incessant mewling and purring noises! I hate them so much! God says it’s ok to hate, right? Anyway, you can believe God anyway you want (as long as it’s Christian doctrine…no Jews or Muslims allowed! And you damn Egyptians, that used to worship cats, you can go to Hell…along with the Mexicans…), so long as we get rid of kittens! Kittens are evil! Did you know it’s a scientifically proven fact that they suck the breath from babies! That’s like, 6th trimester abortion! Which is also illegal!

I don’t recall seeing any protection for kittens, or even any mention of kittens in the Constitution…or in the Bible! And I’ve read both, cover to cover. I know that the Constitution doesn’t have a cover, but I made one with my scrapbooking kit. Did I tell you I’m into scrapbooking? I am. It’s a hobby of mine. Our Currency says, “In God We Trust”. God backwards spells dog. Did I just blow your mind??!! I HATE KITTENS! They grow up to be cats, and I have a bunch of those, because I’m not married. And they’re the reason I’m not married. People call me the ‘cat lady’ and that scares men off. But luckily Jesus loves me. And He hates kittens, too! So to all you kitten lovers in America, “Get through our country!”

Kittens have ruined this great nation, by taking veterinary focus away from parrots, and finches, and those cute, cute little Chinchillas, and by eating all our cream! My ovaries are shriveled, and men are stupid! I get my opinions from right-wing talk show hosts! Oh, wait, where was I? Oh yeah. I hate kittens. Taking kittens out of this world is the only logical course, and to do anything else would be like slapping God in the face with an aborted fetus. I don’t care if they can hold matches, kittens cause forest fires.

this is retarded not only because paranoid ultra-christians think atheists are evil, but because this bitch is just throwing the blame to the minority religous group that already has enough people against them that she doesnt suddenly become hitler, which is what would happen if an atheist said christians were the root of all evil.

  72. When I read something like that, I feel a rush of pride of being an atheist.
Da Vinci, I liked your comment. Soon, a large majority of people, as it is in France, Germany and the Checz Republic, will be atheist.

    See ya in Hell lol

America has a new Adolf Alice Hitler Shannon!

Jesus: “27 But as for those my enemies, who would not have me reign over them, bring them hither and kill them before me.” ( Alice Shannon )

Jesus “16 He that believes and is baptized shall be saved: but he that believes not shall he condemned.”

Jesus: “16 ὁ πιστεύσας καὶ βαπτισθεὶς σωθήσεται, ὁ δὲ ἀπιστήσας κατακριθήσεται.” ( Alice Shannon )

Jesus: “15:5 I am the vine: you the branches. He that abides in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.”

Jesus: “6 If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burns.” ( Holocaust: Alice Shannon Hitler )

The letter might have been a fake but it sadly represented many of the feelings people do have torwards atheists. I have no religion or no god i believe something is out there but i wouldnt say it’s a god.

I don’t go to church but instead go to mexico every sunday and take clothes to poor families. I gives poor children food and when i come home i bring home a homeless animal and give them a new home.

Am I evil because of this. I believe that instead of wasting my time on praying for something to happen i instead go out and do something to help better the world. Is that a sin?

And also in the pledge of allegiance it’s not one nation under god,, it’s supposed to be one nation under citizens rule. because last time i checked it was not god who chooses our presidents, there is no divine right in our nation of america. But it is the people who run this country.

Wow i am only seventeen but i understand alot of things. And what you people are saying about this is total segregation and discrimination. they guys are the nazis and the atheists are the jews.

Do they want to kill the atheists too? i hope not.

Stop attacking other people. Just because it makes you feel powerful. People become dictators this way.
