Recently, a lot has been made about “sexist” comments referring to Sarah Palin. Honestly, I haven’t seen them. Nothing like that has come out of the Obama campaign. Maybe you could make the agrument that it has come out of “the media,” however you want to define that, but I haven’t heard any from the NY Times or CNN.
I’ve heard the McCain/Palin campaign mention sexism. I’ve heard Fox News mention sexism. Maybe I’m just reading the wrong blogs, but I just don’t see it. Where are the sexist attacks?Â
We’ve questioned Palin’s extremist religious beliefs. We’ve mentioned how she came out of nowhere and has basically no real experience. We’ve brought up how she and her daughter “chose” to not have abortions, yet she wants to take that right to choice away from the American people. We talk about how she wanted to ban books in her home town, and how she managed to be at the center of an ethics investigation after less than two years as Governor of Alaska. We’ve discussed how she became mayor of a town with no debt, but racked up 20 million+ in debt before leaving.
Are those quesitons suddenly sexist because she’s a woman? She’s running for the Vice Presidency of the United States, and we know next to nothing about her! Don’t we have the right to ask questions? “The media” wouldn’t be so insistant on asking these quesions if she didn’t come out of nowhere.
Besides, this is nothing. Remember the “swift-boat” attacks from 2004? All those lies and smears coming out of the Republican party? Nothing like that has come from the Democrats. McCain and the Republicans haven’t subject to anywhere near that kind of attack. They don’t really have any right to be complaining about the comparitively tame (and legitimate) “attacks” from “the media.”
You shouldn’t insult my new girlfriend!
You’re missing the point. The people making these arguments ARE sexists, so sexist in fact that they are unable to differentiate “This woman is incompetent” from “This woman is incompetent because she’s a woman.” From their perspective, the fact that she’s a woman makes her automatically an unacceptable candidate, and so anyone voicing concern about her ability to do the job is naturally assumed to be motivated by her gender. From the perspective of the average member of the North American right, she might as well be a bear in a tutu.
McCain’s campaign admitted that she was just a political ploy. After hearing her speak we’ve all pretty much got that she must have been a ploy based off her lack of knowledge. The whole sexist angel is being played by McCain and spun on by the media. No one has said anything bias about her really not by Obama or his campaign. The media is spinning this as if Obama does not know how to deal with her because she’s a woman, I don’t remember Obama having that problem with Hillary, do you. The media is just pressing a GOP talking point. No, it will take us women to denounce her and bring an end to this sexist game McCain is playing. We are the force that can bring down his whole house of cards.
